Apple seizes on Amazon fight pushing its iBooks store for iPhone and iPad

Apple has discounted and promoted a group of books from publisher Hachette Book, which is currently in dispute with Amazon over ebook pricing.

Every one of the 26 discounted ebook pre-orders being offered by Apple for $9.99 or less are scheduled to be published by Hachette, including JK Rowlings new book The Silkworm and a book from best-selling American author James Patterson.

A man recently exonerated in a 1989 New York City killing that happened while he was visiting Disney World has filed papers outlining plans to seek $162m from the city, one of his lawyers said.

By filing what's called a notice of claim on Tuesday, Jonathan Fleming has made a first move toward suing the city over case that put him in prison for nearly 25 years. He was freed and his conviction dismissed in April after the Brooklyn district attorney's office said it now agrees he had a valid alibi.

The US Patent and Trademark Office announced on Wednesday that it is to cancel six trademark registrations belonging to the Washington Redskins, ruling that the NFL team's name is disparaging to Native Americans.

In a landmark decision, the patent office found that the name cannot be trademarked under federal law, which prohibits the protection of names that may be offensive or disparaging.

Firefighters are bracing for another day of hot, dry and windy conditions as they battle a fast-moving wildfire that has consumed thousands of acres of pinon and juniper forest along with traditional grazing lands that Navajo families depend on to raise sheep and other livestock.

Baghdad shootings in 2007 killed 14 and wounded 18 others

A US government prosecutor on Tuesday chronicled for a jury the alleged conduct of four Blackwater security guards accused of killing 14 Iraqis and wounding 18 others in downtown Baghdad nearly seven years ago.

In opening statements at the trial of the four guards, assistant US attorney T Patrick Martin said some of the victims were "simply trying to get out" of the way of gunfire from Blackwater guards. "Fourteen died, 18 injured. For what?" he said.
